WHAT IS MANAGEMENT?
Definition (Mary Parker Follet): Art of getting things done through other people.
Definition (Henry Sisk): Coordination of all resources through planning, organising, directing & controlling to achieve stated objectives.
Key points: Goal-oriented, works through people, continuous process, aims at efficiency & effectiveness, both art & science.
FIVE CONCEPTS OF MANAGEMENT
Economic resource: Most important factor of production, combines land, labour, capital.
Class/Elite: Managers form distinct social group with special knowledge & skills.
System of authority: Hierarchy, chain of command, formal relationships.
Separate discipline: Systematic body of knowledge with principles, theories taught worldwide.
Process: Series of inter-related functions – planning, organising, staffing, directing, controlling.
OBJECTIVES OF MANAGEMENT
Organisational/Economic: Survival (cover costs), Profit (return to owners), Growth (expand).
Social: Eco-friendly methods, employment, community development, ethical practices.
Personal: Competitive salary, growth opportunities, recognition, good working conditions.
IMPORTANCE OF MANAGEMENT
Achieving group goals, Increasing efficiency, Creating dynamic organisation, Achieving personal objectives, Development of society.
LEVELS OF MANAGEMENT
Top Level: Board of Directors, CEO, MD – Set goals, strategies, policies; appoint executives; represent company; coordinate departments.
Middle Level: Departmental managers, divisional heads – Execute plans, interpret policies, evaluate performance, train staff, report to top.
Lower Level (Supervisory): Supervisors, foremen – Plan day-to-day work, supervise workers, arrange materials, maintain discipline, ensure quality.
NATURE OF MANAGEMENT
Science: Systematic knowledge, universal principles, cause-effect relationship.
Art: Practical knowledge, personal skill, creativity, perfected through practice.
Profession: Specialised knowledge, formal education, code of conduct, service motive.
FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT (POSDCORB)
Planning: Deciding in advance what, how, when, who. Provides direction, reduces risk, promotes innovation. Process: Set objectives → Develop premises → Identify alternatives → Evaluate → Select → Implement → Review.
Organising: Identifying & grouping work, defining responsibilities, establishing relationships. Steps: Division of work → Departmentalisation → Assign duties → Reporting relationships → Delegation.
Staffing: Manning organisation with right people. Process: Manpower planning → Recruitment → Selection → Placement → Training → Appraisal → Promotion.
Directing: Instructing, guiding, supervising, motivating, leading. Elements: Supervision, Motivation, Leadership, Communication.
Controlling: Ensuring activities as per plans. Process: Set standards → Measure performance → Compare → Analyse deviations → Corrective action.
Coordination: Synchronising activities of departments/individuals. Essence of management, not separate function. Importance: Unity of action, achieve objectives, harmonious environment, avoid duplication.
MANAGEMENT vs ADMINISTRATION
Level: Administration = top level; Management = middle & lower.
Nature: Administration = thinking (determines what); Management = doing (implements).
Function: Administration = sets policies; Management = executes policies.
Scope: Administration = wider; Management = narrower.
Status: Administration = owners get profit; Management = employees get salary.
Decision: Administration = major policy; Management = operational/routine.
Usage: Administration = government/non-business; Management = business organisations.
